Coach Klein recruited me for Olivet. It was the right fit for me and for my family. The town of Olivet and its small United Church of Christ (UCC) has a significant underground railroad abolitionist history, going back to its founding in 1844. It was the first college to admit Blacks and women in the United States. Since its inception, the college asserted that education should be available to everyone regardless of gender or race. This view went against societal norms. It was the reason why the state of Michigan withheld the college’s charter until 1859.
