Years after college, during my ten-year reunion, I told Paul Kreiner, Ed Jamison, and Jimmy Wencel the truth. They were nothing but supportive. Ed even told me I was one of the most influential people in his life. I didn’t realize it at the time, but as I reflect on it, I see how I must have changed Ed’s initial fear and bias toward Blacks and other marginalized groups.
Ed, along with many of my teammates and other friends with whom I’ve connected over the years, was able to see me for myself and discern my character. That superseded the misinformation he and others grew up learning.
